Private High Schools – U.M.C.A. Rich Tree Academy

UMCA is a privately owned secondary school aiming to give students a new chance at learning. We are an Ontario Ministry of Education-inspected and credited secondary school that goes beyond the provincial expectations of learning. For students that are wondering about their future in a university or college program, UMCA offers you the opportunity to expand on your learning skills.

For the past 15 years we have had several secondary-level students graduate from our school and go onwards to successful undergraduate programs at a variety of post-secondary institutes. This includes universities such as: Schulich; Queen's; Western; University of Toronto; Brock; Guelph; Waterloo; and York to name just a few.

All of our secondary school courses are legitimate credits which will pose no issue or concern for students looking to go a university of their choosing. We also offer courses for part-time students who are looking to expand their academic excellence. At UMCA, our first priority is making sure that our students are learning to their full potential by having teachers that are OCT-qualified in their teaching fields.

For students that are looking for a learning environment that will help expose them to post-secondary learning, UMCA is the school to attain it. We look forward to working with all of you in the future.

Nowadays, parents are provided with a choice in terms of their child’s educational experience. The debate about choosing private or public schooling has been drawing attention for years. What do the modern parent and student choose? Students at U.M.C.A begin their exposure to high school credits in grade 8 since the students have had the opportunity to complete the elementary curriculum throughout grades 1-7. Students in grades 8-12 assume more responsibility for their own learning and more opportunities for individual choices are provided. Full Ministry of Education guidelines are implemented with continued differentiation for gifted students. We operate on a full rotary schedule and provide for an accumulation of a minimum of 30 credits. Students must earn a minimum of 30 credits and 18 compulsories to gain their Ontario Secondary School graduation diploma. The major focus is the provision of high-powered learning experiences that prepare our students for post-secondary education. Universities are currently awarding scholarships to those students who have demonstrated evidence of academic excellence and who have developed a profile exhibiting breadth of experience. Our students graduate with 8-10 university bound credits. To further enhance "breadth of experience" we encourage and provide leadership experience, volunteer work placements, career planning, and mentorships. To provide for a combination of viable class sizes for timetabling and social interaction, coupled with attention to individual needs, the class size is usually 20 students.

We would like to answer some questions that have recently come to light. There appears to be some confusion about summer and private school credits with respect to university applications.  UMCA is not a credit school with a transient student population.  It is a fully realized day school with a unique culture of achievement and a staff that is committed to excellence in pedagogy and practice.  Its graduates have been accepted into the most exclusive university programs in the province and country, and its reputation with the universities, verified by the Ministry’s own inspector, is very high.  The school’s 15 years of history and its growing student population is a testament to the values and principles that have cultivated nearly a generation of students to academic and professional success.
