School Sporting Team

Dear Parents,

I am excited to be coaching UMCA'a very first school sporting team. Last Friday we had our first basketball tryout, for all students in grade 3 to grade 12 and we had a lot of student interest. I am very excited about this student interest, as being a member of a sports team has many positive benefits.

Team sports offer an important learning environment for children, and allow them opportunities to develop relationships. Sport can affect a child's development of self-esteem and self-worth. Because sport is important to children, being good at sports is a strong social asset. When playing a sport, children have the opportunity to show their skills, gain greater self-awareness, and enjoy an activity that they love the most. Sport also provides consistent exercise. Playing on a team sport commits your child to regular exercise, which helps boost immunity and contributes to overall physical health. It also allows them productive time away from their digital devices. Children who play team sports are more apt to stronger academic achievement. Through sports, children learn the importance of time management and discipline. Throughout my teaching career, I have always been a huge supporter of team sport.

As our school basketball team is an extra program to our school (practices and games will be run outside of school hours), it will incur extra costs. Costs that include but are not limited to: gym rentals, uniforms, extra equipment, referee costs, costs to join public/private school basketball organizations for competitions, coaching costs etc.

I would like to hold a meeting for all interested parents this Friday at 5pm. This will give us an opportunity to meet in person and discuss my vision, student/parent commitment and costs to run the program. If we don't have enough current interest from the parents, we may have to wait until next year to start the program or only offer one or two divisions this year. I would like to offer four divisions for both boys and girls from grades 3 to 12.

Hopefully you can all make the meeting. We will hold the meeting in our cafeteria at 5pm this Friday.

I look forward to meeting all of you this Friday.

Best Regards,

Marty
