Welcome to Grade 12 English here at UMCA Richtree Academy! My name is Patrick
Halpenny and I will be your English teacher.
Cramming 5 months of work into just one month can be an overwhelming and, at times, nerve-wracking thing. But fear not, here at Richtree we plan on making
sure that you come to your classes prepared and enthusiastic. It should come as no surprise that within ENG4U there will be a significant amount of reading, writing, and analysis. Each class will be dedicated to a specific reading, followed by a discussion, and a written analysis of each work. I will not be spending each class speaking for hours on end like many dreadful English teachers. This is a course that requires everyone to be involved with thematerial, so please come prepared.
A prime objective within this subject is to prepare students for their university academics. One area that students will need to practice is communication through essay writing. At the end of the course (the same day as their final exam) students will need to submit an analytical essay/independent study unit based on two novels of their choosing. Therefore it is very important that all students read and analyze two specific books (required to be at a grade 11 or grade 12-level of reading).
As for the agenda of the course, students will be observing the following works as a class group. These books/plays will be:
1) A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams
2) Taming of The Shrew by William Shakespeare
3) Kindred by Octavia Butler
Each week students will be writing responses, as well as completing unit assignments and tests.
I know that English requires a lot of time and energy, but with the right attitude and devotion, all of you students can achieve excellent results.
Thank you and I look forward to seeing all of you in the summer!
